Kelly Clarkson Honors Reba McEntire with a Powerful Rendition of “Fancy” at the Kennedy Center Honors

At the 41st Annual Kennedy Center Honors, Kelly Clarkson delivered a heartfelt tribute to her mother-in-law and idol, Reba McEntire, with a stunning cover of McEntire’s 1990 hit “Fancy.”

The special, filmed on December 2 at the prestigious Washington, D.C. venue and aired on CBS, showcased Clarkson’s admiration for McEntire. Before performing the country classic, the 40-year-old singer fought back tears as she expressed her deep respect for McEntire, 67.

“I’ve been a fan of Reba since I was a little girl. Her voice has always felt nostalgic for me. Even as an adult, there’s something about her tone and her storytelling that just feels like home,” Clarkson said, her voice shaking with emotion. “Sometimes when we meet our heroes, it doesn’t always pan out how you hope. But meeting Reba — being friends with her, and eventually becoming family — has been one of the highlights of my life, truly.”

Clarkson went on to thank McEntire for being a guiding figure in her life: “Thank you so much for listening to me vent as an artist. Thank you so much for comforting me on the phone through my tears, like a friend. And thank you for being a really rad grandma for my kids.” She added with a laugh, “I love you so much. I hope you enjoy this song — don’t judge me!”

McEntire was clearly moved by the tribute, giving Clarkson a standing ovation after the performance. Clarkson responded, “Thank you. I hope I did you justice!”

A Deeply Personal Connection

Clarkson and McEntire share more than just musical admiration; they’ve performed together several times, including a memorable duet of Clarkson’s “Because of You” in 2007. The following year, they toured together, creating lasting memories both on and off the stage.

Their bond grew even stronger in 2013, when Clarkson married Brandon Blackstock, McEntire’s former stepson. Despite McEntire’s divorce from Brandon’s father, Narvel Blackstock, in 2015, the two have maintained a close relationship, with McEntire remaining an important part of Clarkson’s extended family.

Clarkson and Brandon have two children together, son Remington “Remy” Alexander (2½) and daughter River Rose (4), along with Brandon’s older children, Seth (11) and Savannah (16). Though the family’s busy schedules often make time together difficult, McEntire still cherishes her role as a grandmother. She joked in an interview with PEOPLE in April, “I don’t ever see the grandkids! It was a lot better when everybody was not so busy. But I’ve got seven grandchildren, so they’re scattered all over the country and busy doing stuff. But I love them.”
