Crews Wright Brings Traditional Country Music to Hollywood Week on American Idol
17-year-old Crews Wright made his mark during Hollywood Week on American Idol, showcasing his passion for traditional country music with a powerful cover of Conway Twitty’s classic hit “Goodbye Time.”
The young talent was first introduced to Idol fans during his audition, where he performed a lively, authentic country rendition of George Strait’s “The Fireman” in front of judges Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan. His impressive performance earned him a Golden Ticket to Hollywood, where the competition would get much tougher.
A Passion for Traditional Country
Before taking the stage for Hollywood Week, Wright shared his thoughts with the judges on why he believes he deserves to be the next American Idol. “I feel I should be the next American Idol because I believe in keeping traditional country alive,” he said. “Music isn’t about something that’s trending; it’s about something that lasts. I try to leave a little piece of me on every stage I walk across.”
And he certainly left his mark that night.
A Memorable Cover of “Goodbye Time”
Wright’s choice of song for Hollywood Week was the heartfelt Conway Twitty classic “Goodbye Time.” Released in 1988, the song reached #7 on the Hot Country Songs chart and was later revived by Blake Shelton in 2004.
When Wright finished his performance, the judges were visibly impressed. Luke Bryan, in awe of Wright’s maturity and vocal ability, jokingly asked, “Do you swear you’re 17?” Carrie Underwood teased, “I need to see a birth certificate!”
Praising Wright’s Talent
Bryan, a country music legend himself, couldn’t hold back his praise for Wright. “I mean, to pick a Conway Twitty song… I grew up on that and lived it,” Bryan shared. “The fact that you’re 17, and that’s where your brain is with music, that’s where you want to sing some pretty cool stuff… you’re going to grow so fast and have so much to offer.” He went on to say, “Just watching you kind of win the room is pretty cool stuff. So good job.”
Advancing to the Next Round
Wright’s impressive performance clearly stood out, as he was one of the contestants to make it through the first round of Hollywood Week. His love for traditional country music, coupled with his undeniable talent, has earned him a spot in the next stage of the competition.
