Carrie Underwood has always been an open book with her fans, but even after two decades in the spotlight, she still manages to surprise people. Recently, as she settled into her role as a judge on American Idol, Carrie’s love for horror movies came to light, and it left fans—and even fellow judge Luke Bryan—absolutely stunned.
As the show progressed into Hollywood Week, one contestant asked Carrie about her top three favorite films, and she didn’t hold back. While many might expect a country superstar like Carrie to list feel-good, family-friendly movies, she shocked everyone when she listed a series of iconic horror films: “Probably Halloween,” she said, followed by, “A Nightmare on Elm Street, I’ve seen all of them. The Alien franchises.”
Luke Bryan’s response was priceless as he joked, “I’m scared to sit by her at this point,” clearly caught off guard by the “dark side” of Carrie Underwood.
This revelation wasn’t entirely new, though. In 2021, Carrie shared with Cody Alan that she’s a fan of Halloween movies and true crime stories. “I love this season! There are so many movies on TV… The Halloween series is definitely a favorite!” she said, adding that she also enjoys watching true crime shows like Snapped and other investigative mysteries. Apparently, there’s a bit of a spooky side to Carrie that fans don’t always get to see!

The reactions from fans have been just as amusing. Many people were surprised to learn that the sweet, wholesome country star enjoys a good scare, with one person commenting, “I can’t even watch Gremlins!” while another said, “Haha Luke. I would have never pictured Carrie as a horror movie fan! But I’m here for it.”
Looks like the American Idol stage isn’t the only place where Carrie Underwood can surprise us. Between her powerful vocals, country stardom, and newfound horror movie fandom, she proves that there’s always more to discover about this talented and multi-dimensional artist.
