Vince Gill and Amy Grant’s daughter, Corinna Gill, took to the stage with her dad on August 5 for a deeply emotional and touching moment at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium, also known as “The Mother Church.” The father-daughter duo performed an unforgettable duet of “When My Amy Prays,” a song Vince originally wrote for Amy, which appears on his 2019 album, Okie.
However, for this special performance, Corinna made it her own by adjusting the lyrics to say “When My Mama Prays” in honor of her mother.
A Moving Tribute to Amy Grant
Vince introduced the performance by explaining the significance of the song. “We’re gonna do this song that I wrote for my wife, Amy,” he said, before revealing the inspiration behind the moment. He explained that due to Amy’s recent accident, they had been reflecting on her and the importance of her presence in their lives. “We’ve been thinking a lot about her, and I thought how sweet it would be for her youngest [child] to sing the song [that] I wrote for her,” Vince continued.
As the song began, Corinna became visibly emotional while singing the title lyric. She also made the heartfelt decision to change the words from “When My Amy prays” to “When My Mama prays,” acknowledging that her faith mirrors that of her father. The emotional performance brought the audience to their feet, with a well-deserved standing ovation.
A Difficult Time for Amy Grant
This performance came at a time when Amy Grant was still recovering from a bicycle accident that took place in late July. Amy sustained cuts, lacerations, and bruises and was knocked unconscious for about 10 to 15 minutes before being hospitalized. Thankfully, she was in stable condition and sent home to recover.
As a result of the accident, Amy was forced to postpone several concerts, though these performances have been rescheduled for April and June of the following year.
The Emotional Power of the Song
Vince Gill has previously spoken about the emotional depth of the song. In 2021, he shared how the song, which reflects his love and admiration for Amy, is a testament to their relationship. He revealed that it’s one of his favorite vocal performances.
“The beauty in this song is the vulnerability I paint myself in,” Vince admitted. “The whole record came from a place of honesty,” he continued, acknowledging that while people might expect his life to be shaped by his relationship with a prominent Christian singer like Amy, their personal lives are uniquely their own.
