The McCaughey Septuplets: From Miracle Babies to Independent Adults
In 1997, Kenny and Bobbi McCaughey of Iowa made history with the birth of the world’s first surviving septuplets—Kenny Jr., Alexis, Natalie, Kelsey, Nathan, Brandon, and Joel. Born nine weeks premature, their arrival captured global attention and flooded the family with support, media coverage, and generous donations, including a large home, a van, and college scholarships.
Raising eight children—including their eldest daughter, Mikayla—meant going through 52 diapers and 42 bottles daily. Despite the chaos, the McCaugheys remained grounded, even growing their own vegetables to cut costs.
Two of the siblings, Alexis and Nathan, were diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Nathan later had back surgery and eventually taught himself to walk unaided. All seven graduated high school and went on to pursue higher education—some at Hannibal-LaGrange University, others closer to home, and Brandon through military service in the U.S. Army.
College was a major turning point. “Growing up, we were always together,” said Kelsey, who now works in public relations. “College helped us grow into individuals with our own identities.”
Each sibling has charted their own path:
-
Alexis earned a degree in early childhood education and won the Teen Miss Dreams Made True pageant.
-
Nathan and Joel are studying computer information systems, with Joel aiming to work in cybersecurity at Google.
-
Natalie is pursuing graduate school to become an athletic trainer.
-
Kenny Jr. and Alexis attended Des Moines Area Community College.
-
Brandon serves in the U.S. Army.
Their older sister Mikayla married in 2015 and made them all aunts and uncles. Natalie and Brandon later married in 2019.
Now grown, the septuplets reflect on their shared journey. “We’re not just the septuplets,” Kelsey said. “We’re individuals, and we’re proud of who we’ve become.”
