Slater Nalley’s Emotional Audition Leaves Carrie Underwood in Tears on American Idol
Seventeen-year-old country artist Slater Nalley brought raw emotion and heartfelt storytelling to the American Idol stage during his 2025 audition — and left a lasting impression on everyone in the room, including judge Carrie Underwood.
The Atlanta-based teen performed an original song titled “Traces of You,” written in honor of his high school teacher Mrs. Davis’s late son, Carter. The song was based on a poem that Mrs. Davis had written, and Slater turned it into a moving tribute. Nervous at first, Slater quickly found his footing once he started playing, delivering a performance that was powerful, tender, and deeply sincere.
Slater’s voice is something special — gritty, vulnerable, and full of heart. Combined with his heartfelt lyrics and acoustic guitar, it was clear he was a natural storyteller. As he sang, both Carrie Underwood and Mrs. Davis were overcome with emotion, wiping away tears during the performance.
The performance, which American Idol shared on YouTube on February 28, 2025, quickly resonated with viewers. In just one month, it racked up over 2.7 million views, with thousands of fans leaving comments like:
“What an authentic, raw voice. With a heart like that, this young man will go far.”
“When you touch someone’s heart and bring a tear, you are a songwriter and singer. You have a gift.”
Carrie Underwood, herself deeply moved, turned to Mrs. Davis first:
“Even though this was about your son, every single person that hears that can fill in that memory with somebody in themselves,” she said, her voice trembling. “I couldn’t have imagined you doing that any better.”
Lionel Richie also praised Slater’s songwriting chops, highlighting one standout lyric:
“That one line — ‘Your life was like a river running home’ — that moves, man. That’s the one. Very powerful.”
The judges were so blown away that they didn’t even bother with the usual vote.
“You’re going to Hollywood,” they told Slater unanimously, sealing his place in the next round.
This season has seen an impressive lineup of country talent, including 25-year-old Sam Sparks of Dardanelle, Arkansas, who also shared an emotional original song, “Colorado Gray,” after surviving a life-altering car accident. But Slater’s audition stood out for its sincerity, simplicity, and soul.
Slater Nalley may be just 17, but with a voice and heart like his, there’s no doubt he’s a rising star to watch.
