Carrie Underwood Honors Toby Keith With Emotional Tribute Following His Passing
The country music world was shaken by the loss of Toby Keith, who passed away on February 5, 2024, at age 62 after a battle with stomach cancer. Among the many stars mourning his death, fellow Oklahoma native Carrie Underwood shared one of the most heartfelt tributes.
Underwood took to social media to remember Keith, posting a series of throwback photos and writing:
“Saddle up the horses, Jesus, ’cause a true blue COWBOY just made his ride up to heaven!!! Introduce him to all the Okies and sign that boy up for the choir! We’re gonna miss you, Toby, but my heart has no doubt that you are standing in the presence of our King right now!!! See you again someday, friend.”
The two country icons shared a deep Oklahoma connection and years of friendship. Underwood had previously honored Keith in 2022 at the BMI Icon Awards, performing his breakout hit, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.”
After Keith’s passing, she revisited the song in April 2024 during a special performance at the Grand Ole Opry—just weeks after an all-star tribute to Keith aired at the CMT Music Awards.
“Always a wonderful night when it’s a night at the @opry! I consider myself so incredibly blessed to be a part of this family!” she shared on Instagram following her performance.
With emotion in her voice and reverence in every note, Underwood delivered “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” once more—this time as a poignant farewell to a country legend.
Toby Keith left behind not only a legacy of music but also a legacy of compassion through his work with the Toby Keith Foundation. The foundation continues to support OK Kids Korral, a home-away-from-home for families of children undergoing cancer treatment. Those wishing to honor Keith’s memory can make donations through the foundation’s official website.
