American Idol Family Rally Around Season 23 Finalist Josh King During Hospitalization
The American Idol community has been showing immense support for Season 23 finalist Josh King, who was hospitalized for several days earlier this month.
On June 9, King shared a photo of himself in a hospital bed, flanked by fellow contestants Skylie Marie Thompson and Grayson Torrence. The trio had been attending a songwriting retreat in Virginia, hosted by fellow contestant Nina Daig, shortly before King’s health took a serious turn.

According to King’s Instagram post, the retreat started positively with days full of music and creativity. However, after one night, King began feeling unwell. The next morning, he found himself “entirely unable to move,” suffering from excruciating pain that caused severe stomach distress.
Daig’s husband quickly took King to the emergency room, where he was admitted and stayed over the weekend. Doctors diagnosed him with Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS), caused by a combination of dehydration, fatigue, stress, and heat exhaustion. King’s heart rate remained elevated at 125-130 bpm, and he was monitored closely for two nights due to heart strain, forcing him to miss the remainder of the songwriting camp.

Josh King Now Released and Recovering
In a recent update, King confirmed he has been discharged from the hospital and is currently “on the mend.” He also explained his reduced social media activity was due to his health condition. King expressed heartfelt gratitude to his American Idol family for their unwavering support during this difficult time.
Continuing the American Idol Journey
Despite his health scare, King persevered in the competition, advancing to the Top 8. During this round, he performed Michael Bublé’s “Home,” a song chosen by judge Lionel Richie. He also joined Richie and fellow contestants Jamal Roberts and Gabby Samone for a group performance of “Dancing on the Ceiling.” Unfortunately, at the end of the episode, King was up for elimination alongside Mattie Pruitt, with the judges opting to save Pruitt.
A Look Back at Josh King’s Idol Journey
The 24-year-old Nashville native auditioned for Season 23 with renditions of “Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland and “My Girl” by The Temptations, earning enthusiastic “yes” votes from Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, while Carrie Underwood gave a “no.”
King’s journey touched many fans and judges alike, especially after his courageous decision to step back from competing for the Top 7 spot, a move that left audiences emotional.
