At 84, Sir Tom Jones Embraces the Changes in His Voice—and Shows No Sign of Slowing Down
The legendary Welsh singer, whose career spans back to the swinging ’60s, isn’t just accepting the effects of age—he’s celebrating how it has enriched his vocal performance.
In a recent interview with Yours Magazine, Jones reflected on the transformation time has brought to his voice:
“My voice has definitely dropped. As we get older, the pitch changes and there’s more texture. Sure, you lose a bit of control, but you gain richness, more character. That’s what I hear now.”
Jones added,
“You’ve just got to work with it—push harder. And I still can. I can sing, and I’ll prove it every time I step on stage.”
And prove it he does. This year alone, Tom has taken his Ages & Stages World Tour across Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and the UAE. Now back in the UK, he’s gearing up for shows in Surrey, Plymouth, and Southampton before heading to Spain later this month. Rather than slowing down, Jones thrives on the road.
While many of his peers have retired, the “It’s Not Unusual” star remains driven.
“You reach a certain age and start looking at life differently,” he said. “But I don’t feel worn out—I feel motivated. I’ve still got something to prove.”
Known as much for his powerhouse vocals as his heartthrob status in his heyday, Jones also reminisced about the wild fan encounters of his youth with a laugh:
“It started as a bit of shtick and snowballed. Next thing I knew, I was drowning in panties.”
One memorable moment came in Las Vegas:
“Someone threw a room key on stage. I asked, ‘Whose is this?’ and a woman replied, ‘Use it and you’ll find out.’”

Though the fan frenzy has faded, Jones doesn’t miss that chapter. His focus now is on performance and health. After undergoing a hip replacement in 2017 and a second surgery five years later, he feels strong and ready to keep performing.
“If my voice gave out, I wouldn’t keep going,” he told The Metro. “I wouldn’t want to cheat an audience. But as long as I can sing like this, I’ll keep doing what I love.”
While he no longer moves around the stage like he once did, Sir Tom Jones has never sounded more determined—and he’s not stepping away anytime soon.
