– “Your order. Enjoy your meal,” I said quietly, smiling as usual.
A woman of about sixty looked at me with displeasure.

– “Sorry, but I just brought it from the bar, it’s hot…”
– “Don’t you dare contradict me!” – the woman pushed my hand sharply, and the cup almost fell over.
Several visitors turned their heads, watching the scene. My ears burned, I felt ashamed and scared.
The woman continued:
— “I pay money, and you can’t even serve coffee properly. Where is your boss? Let him see how they treat customers here!”
At that moment, the manager came up. He threw me a displeased look:
— “What’s going on?”
— “Your employees are mocking the customers!” the woman exclaimed, “I’ve been carrying coffee for half an hour, and it’s ice cold! And she’s being cheeky!”

I tried to explain:
— “That’s not true, the coffee was just made…”
But the manager interrupted me:
— “Enough excuses. You’re letting the establishment down. You won’t see your salary this month – you’ll be working for free, as part of the disciplinary fine.”
My heart sank somewhere into my heels. I felt tears welling up in my eyes, but I couldn’t say anything. The woman smirked smugly and turned away to her dessert.
I was riding home in a crowded bus that evening. My eyes were burning with tears. I clutched my bag in my hands and thought only about how I would have no money now. I had saved up for my studies, put aside every penny, and lost everything because of one impudent woman.
“Why am I even working here? Why am I being humiliated?” – I thought to myself.
I remembered how she pushed my hand, how loudly she screamed, and how everyone looked at me with curiosity. Inside, there was a feeling of injustice and burning shame.

The next day I was walking down the street and suddenly heard a scream:
— “Help! They stole my bag! Stop!”
I turned around. The same woman from the cafe was standing on the sidewalk, pale and confused. The young guy was running away, clutching her bag to himself.
— “Girl, stop him! Please! My entire pension is in there!” — she looked straight at me pleadingly.
Our eyes met. There was panic, despair… and something else in her gaze. Maybe she recognized me.
I took a step to the side — and stopped. Something pricked my chest. The scene in the cafe appeared before my eyes: her scream, her hand pushing mine, the manager’s words about free work.
I lowered my eyes and walked past.
She continued to scream, but I no longer listened.
At that moment I realized: life itself knows how to put people in their place.
Maybe I did the wrong thing by not helping the old woman, but at that moment I was in great pain.
