The officers simultaneously slammed on the brakes. The car stopped abruptly, and one of them rushed to the child.
“Girl! What are you doing here alone?!” His voice broke from the strain.
She didn’t answer. She just shivered from the cold and continued to hold the toy tightly. The man took off his jacket and wrapped her up. The girl was icy to the touch, as if she had been standing in the rain all night.
The second officer looked along the dark highway – there were no cars or adults in sight. Only silence and this tiny figure that seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.
“Are you alone? Where are your parents?” the first officer asked softly, crouching down to her eye level.
The girl nodded slightly, then pressed her lips together as if she was afraid to speak. Her big eyes were shining with tears, but not a sound escaped.
