The winter day was quiet and cold. The driver was moving along his usual route – everything seemed the same as always. But suddenly his attention was drawn to something unusual: a pack of wolves was standing right on the tracks.
They did not run away, did not hide in the forest, as usually happens when predators see a train. On the contrary – the wolves seemed to deliberately block the train’s path. Their amber eyes glowed in the headlights, and they howled, one after another, so loudly and drawn-outly that the driver was frightened.
He instinctively pressed the brakes. The wheels creaked, the train moved a few more meters by inertia, and one of the wolves almost ended up under the wheels. But even after that, the animals did not retreat. They stood on the rails, not allowing the steel machine to move any further.
At first, the driver thought that the wolves had simply gone crazy or were simply hungry and wanted to attack. But then he squinted, trying to see why exactly the wolves were standing on the rails.

The driver rushed outside. The frosty air hit him in the face. The wolves did not touch him – on the contrary, they parted, allowing him to approach the lying man.
It seemed that the animals understood: this man was important to them, and it was for his sake that they stopped the train.
Bending down, the driver felt for a pulse. The man was alive, but barely breathing. He brought him back to his senses, rubbing his hands, checking his breathing. The victim opened his eyes with difficulty, his lips were trembling from the cold, but he was able to whisper a few words.

It turned out that they really did try to kill the man. Several people beat him and threw him right onto the tracks, hoping that the next train would put an end to it.
But the wolves, as if sensing trouble, gathered in a pack and stood on the tracks, protecting him to the last.
The driver called for help on the radio. Before the rescuers arrived, he covered the victim with everything he found in the cabin — an old blanket and his jacket. The wolves did not leave the entire time, they sat nearby, warily watching his every movement.
When people arrived to take the man, the pack slowly retreated into the forest. Their mission was accomplished.
