Yesterday was my birthday. My husband and I invited everyone close to us: my parents, friends, his parents, and my sister and her husband. The evening was light and cheerful—the house was filled with laughter, conversation, and music. Everything seemed to be going perfectly.
When it came time to give gifts, I was as excited as a child. The first gifts were pleasant and warm. My parents handed me an envelope with money, saying it would fulfill any of my dreams. My husband’s sister gave me cosmetics, and my mother-in-law gave me a towel—a practical gift, as always.
And then came the moment when my husband handed me a small box. I opened it—and held my breath. A gold ring with a diamond. The very one I’ve dreamed of for years.
“But it’s so expensive…” I said quietly.
“I wouldn’t mind spending anything for you,” my husband smiled.
I hugged and kissed him, happier than ever. But at that moment, the holiday suddenly took a turn for the worse.
“So, we have no food at home, and you’re buying your wife such expensive gifts?” my mother-in-law snapped.
“Mom, I’ve been saving up for this ring for a long time. I have the money, don’t worry,” my husband replied calmly.
