The police officers felt sorry for the poor old woman who was illegally selling on the street, but when one of them bent down to examine the vegetables more closely, the woman was immediately arrested.
The police had received a call reporting illegal trading on the corner of the main street and went to the scene right away. But upon seeing a seemingly harmless old woman with a crate of vegetables, their resolve vanished.
The woman was standing next to neatly arranged tomatoes, carrots, and cucumbers. She was wearing an old, worn sweater and a faded skirt.
“Grandma, do you know that selling on the street is prohibited?” one of the officers asked calmly.
“Yes, dear,” she sighed. “But I need money for my sick son’s medicine. He has no one left, and no one is helping us. I grew all these vegetables myself in my garden.” There’s nothing wrong with that.
The police officers looked at each other. The infraction was obvious, but they felt sorry for her.
“This time, we’ll turn a blind eye,” said the older one. “But, Grandma, try to find another job. Other officers might not be as lenient as we are.”
“Yes, yes, of course,” replied the woman nervously, as if she wanted them to leave as quickly as possible.
“Since we’re here, let’s at least buy her something,” smiled one of the officers. “Let’s do a good deed.”
“No, that’s not necessary, my dear,” she replied hurriedly. “I already have plenty of customers.”
“Plenty of customers?” his colleague exclaimed. “But there’s no one around.”
“Well… they come in the morning,” she laughed awkwardly, “you haven’t seen them.”
“Okay, then let’s at least take a few tomatoes,” the policeman insisted.
“No, son,” she refused again, “leave them, let there be some for the others.”
Her voice trembled, her gaze darted about. One of the policemen frowned, bent down, and took a tomato from the crate. He examined it carefully, then said abruptly:
“Arrest her. Right now.”

The policeman showed the tomato. Tiny puncture marks were visible on its surface, as if someone had injected something with a needle. The same marks were visible on the other vegetables.
Later, during the investigation, it was discovered that, disguised as a poor, defenseless old woman, the woman was actually distributing illegal substances.
At her home, her disabled son was found manufacturing these substances, while the mother distributed and sold them, counting on no one suspecting a grandmother with trembling hands and a kindly smile.
