Ludmila climbed the stairs feeling as if every step grew heavier. In her hands was a store-bought cake she had grabbed after work — something she knew her mother-in-law, Tamara Ivanovna, would immediately criticize. Before the door even opened, Ludmila sensed how the evening would unfold.
The moment they stepped inside, Tamara’s sarcastic greeting confirmed her fears. She eyed the cake as if it were a mistake Ludmila had made on purpose, and the comments about “a real woman always finding time to bake” began before coats were even off. Ludmila tried to stay polite, though inside she felt the familiar mix of discomfort and frustration.
The apartment was full of relatives — some she knew, many she had never met. Questions about her job, her income, and even the inheritance she recently received were thrown across the table with a smile that didn’t quite hide the curiosity behind it. When someone casually suggested that her late grandmother’s apartment would be “perfect for the family,” Ludmila realized the evening had turned into a discussion about her property rather than a celebration.
A week later, Ludmila learned the situation had gone further than she imagined. Tamara called to announce they had already visited the apartment — using a key her husband Valery had given them without her consent. They had started “making the place cozy,” convinced it was only natural for relatives to take the lead.
Shocked, Ludmila went straight to the apartment. Boxes, coats, and household items she didn’t recognize filled the hallway. In the kitchen, relatives discussed new curtains; in the living room, a wall was already being prepared for renovation. Everyone behaved as though the home belonged to them.
Trying to keep her voice steady, Ludmila asked them to leave. The request was met with confusion, excuses, and lectures about family unity. When Valery arrived and defended the situation, insisting his relatives were “only helping,” Ludmila understood that the deeper issue wasn’t the renovation — it was the lack of boundaries and respect.
The next morning, the noise of construction woke her up. Determined not to let the situation escalate further, Ludmila told everyone firmly that she needed her space back. The tension grew, and when even Valery refused to support her decision, she realized that staying in this marriage meant accepting constant intrusion into her life and home.
With calm clarity, Ludmila told him she was filing for divorce and asked everyone to leave the apartment. Though surprised, the relatives eventually gathered their things and stepped out, leaving the place quiet once more.
When the door finally closed, Ludmila stood in the middle of the half-finished room. It was messy, but it was her space again.
For the first time in a long while, she felt a sense of peace — and the beginning of a life where she could set her own rules.
