Irina and her husband Sergey finally bought a large apartment after saving for fifteen years. To reduce taxes, they registered the apartment in Sergey’s mother’s name, trusting her completely.
Soon after the purchase, the mother suffered a stroke. During her illness, Sergey’s younger brother Evgeny secretly obtained power of attorney and began selling the apartment, claiming he was acting on their mother’s behalf. By the time Irina and Sergey found out, buyers were already involved.
Despite protests and legal action, the apartment was sold. The court later ruled the deal partly invalid, but only a portion of the money was recovered. Years of savings were lost.
The family was destroyed: Sergey cut all ties with his brother, and his mother was left ashamed and broken by what she had allowed to happen.
Using the recovered funds, Irina and Sergey bought a small apartment together—this time registered honestly in both their names. They learned a painful lesson: no financial “shortcut” is worth risking trust, family, or security.
