The boy’s name was Ilyès. He was ten years old.
A homeless man named Bernard found him as a baby under a bridge near the Canal Saint-Martin in Paris. The child was lying in a plastic basin after a heavy rain. An old red bracelet was on his wrist. Next to it was a wet note: “Please take care of him. His name is Ilyès.”
Bernard himself lived on the streets, but he took the child in. He fed him whatever he could find and kept him warm as best he could. He always said, “If you find his mother, forgive her. Children are not abandoned without pain.”
Years later, Bernard became gravely ill. Ilyès begged for alms and one day found himself at a lavish wedding in a castle near Versailles. They gave him a plate of food.
When the bride appeared, he froze. She was wearing the same red bracelet.
He approached and quietly asked if she was his mother.
The woman turned pale. At seventeen, she secretly gave birth to a child, fearing family pressure, and abandoned him by the canal, hoping someone would find him. She then searched for him, but to no avail.
The groom stopped the ceremony. He said he accepted not only her, but also her past. And if the boy was her son, then he was his too.
And then he added one more thing: Bernard was his biological father, with whom he had long lost contact. The very man who had saved the child.
That day, the wedding took place. But first, everyone went to the hospital to see Bernard.
The old man saw them together and whispered, “The heart always returns to those it has loved.”
For the first time in his life, Ilyès felt he had a family. And more than one.
