AL ROKER’S HEALTH JOURNEY: WHY HIS STORY CONTINUES TO INSPIRE

Al Roker has spent decades bringing warmth, humor and energy to television screens, but behind his familiar smile is a health journey marked by serious challenges and remarkable resilience.

In 2020, the longtime TODAY personality revealed that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer after a routine medical examination showed an elevated PSA level. Doctors determined that the cancer was aggressive, and Roker underwent surgery to remove his prostate. He later said that early detection played a crucial role in his recovery.

The experience changed the way he approached his health. Roker became even more vocal about the importance of regular screenings, particularly for men who may postpone medical appointments because they feel healthy.

Then, in 2022, he faced another frightening medical crisis. Blood clots developed in his leg and traveled to his lungs. Complications later included internal bleeding caused by ulcers, and he underwent major surgery involving his gallbladder, colon and duodenum.

For weeks, viewers noticed his absence from television and sent messages of support.

Roker eventually returned to TODAY and gradually rebuilt his strength. Walking became an important part of his recovery and remains central to his fitness routine.

Despite everything he has experienced, Roker has continued working, spending time with his family and encouraging others to take their health seriously. In 2025, he said he remained cancer-free and continued to undergo annual blood tests. More recent appearances in 2026 show him still active on TODAY.

His story is therefore not simply about illness. It is about early detection, recovery and learning to appreciate the ordinary moments that can suddenly become precious.

For Roker, surviving serious health problems has given even greater meaning to time spent with his wife, children and granddaughter.

And perhaps that is why his journey resonates with so many people: behind the television personality is someone who has faced fear, uncertainty and difficult recoveries—and kept moving forward.
