American Idol Recap: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night Sends Two Contestants Home as Top 12 Is Revealed
The American Idol stage lit up on Sunday, April 27, as the Top 14 contestants paid tribute to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame legends. With viewer voting now in full effect, each artist gave it their all in hopes of earning a spot in the Top 12.
Judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie were on hand to offer feedback, while music legend James Taylor served as mentor, helping each singer fine-tune their performances and stage presence.

The platinum ticket winner opened the night with a powerful, soulful rendition that had the crowd on their feet.
Lionel Richie: “That is a smackdown way to start the show. Killer, killer.”
Luke Bryan: “Perfect song choice. That was amazing.”
Carrie Underwood: Agreed enthusiastically.
🎤 Mattie Pruitt – “Piece of My Heart” (Janis Joplin)
Mattie showed major vocal strength despite her young age. James Taylor helped her connect more deeply with the lyrics.
Underwood: “Great song choice, beautifully sung. Now find your sass, sister!”
Bryan: “One of my favorite vocals from you.”
Richie: Encouraged her to grow in stage confidence.
🎤 John Foster – “Jailhouse Rock” (Elvis Presley)
Determined to show his versatility, John channeled the King but made it his own.
Bryan: “Not Elvis—just John doing Elvis. Great performance.”
Richie: “You were so comfortable. That’s what made it believable.”
🎤 Desmond Roberts – “Jesus Is Love” (Lionel Richie)
Saved by the judges last week, Desmond sang one of Richie’s own songs with deep personal meaning.
Richie: “You found octaves I didn’t! That was bold—and you nailed it.”
Underwood & Bryan: Praised the emotional delivery and control.
🎤 Jamal Roberts – “Shout” (The Isley Brothers)
Jamal energized the crowd with his daughters cheering him on from the audience.
Underwood: “Started soft, then built to something amazing. That could’ve been wedding karaoke—but you made it iconic.”

Determined to validate her save, Amanda brought poise and vocal finesse.

Taylor advised more eye contact, and Canaan delivered one of the night’s strongest vocals.

Josh took a risk with his falsetto and leaned into his charm.

Taylor mentored Thunderstorm personally on his own song, and the performance was stunning.

Gabby went big—and delivered.

Though vocally strong, nerves were visible.

Kolbi radiated confidence and delivered a standout vocal.
Bryan: “Sensory overload—in the best way.”
Richie: “You’ve arrived. Amazing performance.”
Underwood: Loved the attitude and polish.

Ché, saved last week, brought depth and power.
