When Sophie entered the hospital room, she saw frightened doctors, flashing equipment lights, and a monitor sounding repeatedly.
“Check that cable,” she suddenly said.
One doctor ordered her to leave, but the little girl insisted.
A monitor connection was loose.
Once it was properly secured, the readings returned to normal.
Everyone stared at her.
“How did you know?”
Sophie lowered her eyes.
Her mother had worked at that same hospital for years. She always told her daughter that when everyone started panicking, the simplest things should be checked first.
Then Sophie looked toward the white curtain hiding the patient.
“My mother knew that man.”
The female doctor suddenly went pale.
Sophie pulled a sealed letter from her pocket. Her mother had given it to her before she died, telling her to open it only when she finally found this man.
Inside was an old photograph and a short confession.
The truth had been hidden for years.
The man behind the curtain was Sophie’s biological father.
He had never known he had a daughter.
Her mother had raised Sophie alone after a painful family conflict separated them. Before her death, however, she decided her daughter deserved to know where she came from.
When the man recovered, the doctor gave him the letter.
Soon afterward, he asked to see the little girl.
Sophie entered the room slowly.
Neither of them knew what to say.
The man simply reached out his hand.
She took it.
Sophie had arrived at the hospital believing she was there to deliver her mother’s final secret.
She never imagined that behind that white curtain she would find the answer to the question she had carried throughout her entire childhood
