The grand hall of the New York mansion fell silent as Victoria pointed at the crying young woman.
“Give that pendant back right now. It belongs to our family.”
The girl slowly opened her trembling hand.
“It doesn’t belong to your family… it’s mine.”
Victoria stepped closer.
“You’re lying. I’ve seen that necklace my entire life.”
Without saying a word, the elderly gentleman crossed the room to a large red safe.
He unlocked it and carefully removed a small jewelry box.
No one spoke.
When he opened it, everyone gasped.
Inside rested the matching half of the same silver heart-shaped pendant.
Victoria’s face lost all color.
The old man looked directly at the girl.
“If you have the other half… then you’re the child who was taken from us that night.”
Tears filled the girl’s eyes.
“I grew up in foster care. This pendant is all my mother left me.”
The old man carefully joined the two halves together.
They fit perfectly.
Hidden inside the pendant was a tiny engraved date.
His hands began to shake.
“I had this engraved the day my granddaughter was born.”
Victoria burst into tears.
“We thought she was gone forever.”
But the old man’s expression didn’t soften.
Instead, he slowly looked across the room.
The family’s longtime butler lowered his eyes.
“There were only four people who knew where the baby was that night,” the old man said quietly.
The room became completely still.
The young woman had finally found the family she had been searching for all her life.
But she was about to learn that the person responsible for taking her away had been standing inside that mansion all along.
