King Charles Is Unlikely to Hand the Crown to William Early, Royal Commentators Say

King Charles spent more than five decades waiting to become Britain’s monarch. When Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022, Charles finally ascended the throne at the age of 73. Yet only a few years into his reign, attention has increasingly turned toward Prince William and the future of the monarchy.

Much of that speculation intensified after Buckingham Palace announced in February 2024 that the King had been diagnosed with cancer. Since then, questions have repeatedly surfaced over whether Charles might eventually choose to abdicate and allow his eldest son to become king sooner than expected.

Royal commentators, however, generally consider that scenario unlikely.

Charles was prepared for the crown for most of his life, and there has been no official indication that he intends to voluntarily give it up. Although his health has forced him to adjust his schedule and temporarily reduce some public engagements, he has continued carrying out constitutional duties and gradually returned to a fuller programme.

Prince William, meanwhile, has taken on an increasingly visible role. As heir to the throne, the Prince of Wales was always expected to shoulder greater responsibilities over time, but his father’s illness has accelerated that process.

William has represented the monarchy at major events, supported his father and handled additional engagements when necessary. Still, this does not necessarily mean that a transfer of power is imminent.

Royal experts have also stressed that William and Catherine are preparing carefully for their eventual roles without appearing eager for Charles’ reign to end. Their current priority is understood to be supporting the King while maintaining stability within the royal family.

Abdication would also be a major step for a monarch who waited more than 70 years for his chance to serve. British royal tradition strongly favors lifelong service, and Charles has repeatedly emphasized duty throughout his public life.

For now, there is no sign that King Charles plans to voluntarily surrender the crown. Prince William may be taking on more responsibilities than before, but he remains the heir rather than the monarch.

Unless circumstances change dramatically, Britain’s next royal transition is expected to happen in the traditional way — with William continuing to prepare while Charles remains King.
