The rainy day turned the courtyard of the luxurious countryside mansion into a bleak and dreary place. An elegant elderly lady stepped out from the villa’s doors. Dressed in an expensive dark fur coat, her hair immaculately styled, and sporting prominent rings on her fingers, she looked like a true representative of high society. Her attention was drawn to a little girl standing right under the pouring rain. The child’s face was smeared with dirt, and her soaked hair clung to her shoulders.

Seeing the frightened girl, the woman initially turned to her staff with a logical demand:

— Somebody bring this child inside! — she ordered with concern.

But the girl did not move an inch. Holding back tears and trembling from the cold, she raised her despairing eyes to the woman and reached her hands out toward her.

— My mother said you had to see me, — the little one sobbed, clutching an old object on a chain in her hands.

The elderly lady frowned in surprise, as something about the tone or look of this defenseless child caused her heart to tighten with a bad premonition.

— What was your mother’s name? — she asked seriously.

— Elena… — the girl replied, large tears rolling down her dirty cheeks. — She left me this before she died.

The woman reached out and took the item. It was an old pocket watch made of sterling silver with a unique engraving. As soon as the lady opened the lid and stared at the familiar pattern, her facial expression instantly changed. Her arrogance and composure vanished, replaced by sheer shock and horror. She froze, barely breathing, her fingers tightly gripping the metal. This watch was a family heirloom that she had given to her only daughter, Elena, many years ago before she left home for good after a bitter family argument.

The girl, noticing the shock on the woman’s face, quietly added, sniffing her nose:

— She said you were my grandmother… but you never knew I existed.

The elderly woman shifted her stunned gaze from the watch to the girl’s face. Now, through the mud and tears, she clearly saw her own bloodline in the features of this child—a spitting image of her deceased daughter. In an instant, the cold rain and past pride ceased to matter: faced with the bitter truth, the woman realized that fate had given her a second chance to right the mistakes of the past, granting her a granddaughter she would now never let go.
