A girl asked a stranger to pretend to be her father at her graduation — but he didn’t expect to hear her last name.

Lila Carter stood at the school entrance in an old yellow dress, trying not to cry.

Today was her elementary school graduation. Children were laughing all around, and parents were bringing flowers, balloons, and gifts. But Lila knew: there would be no one in the hall for her. Her mother had died two years ago, her grandmother was practically bedridden, and she had never known her father.

Then the girl noticed a man in a gray suit by the road. He looked serious and alien, but there was a weariness in his eyes that almost resembled sadness.

Lila plucked up her courage, approached him, and quietly asked:

“Can you pretend to be my dad today? Just for a couple of hours…”

The man froze.

“What’s your name?” he asked.

“Lila Carter.”

His face changed so abruptly, as if he had heard a name from the past.

“I’m Elliot Vance,” he said quietly. “And I’m going with you.”

For the first time in the audience, Lila wasn’t sitting alone. When she took the stage, Elliot stood up and applauded louder than anyone else. The girl smiled through her tears.

After the ceremony, the director approached him with a folder in her hands.

“Mr. Vance… did you know Lila’s mother?”

Elliot paled. It turned out Lila’s mother had once worked for his family and had hidden the truth for years: Elliot was the girl’s father. He didn’t even know he had a child.

Lila looked at him fearfully, expecting him to leave.

But Elliot knelt before her and took her small hands in his.

“Today you asked me to pretend to be your dad,” he said in a trembling voice. “But I will never pretend again. If you let me, I will be the real deal.”

Lila threw her arms around his neck.

That day, she came to graduation an orphan. And she left with her father, whom fate had returned to her at just the right moment.
