At the officer’s funeral, his faithful dog suddenly jumped onto the coffin and began barking and whining loudly. The people were horrified when they understood why.
A hero was being buried—a beloved commander, a father, and a man who had given his life for his country. Everyone was present at the cemetery that day: relatives, friends, colleagues, comrades-in-arms. Everyone felt that with his passing, an entire era was ending, a piece of the hearts of all those who had known him.
The coffin was covered with flowers—bright, but seemingly colorless at that moment. The air was thick with grief, and no one tried to hold back their tears. Men sobbed, women wept, unable to comprehend what had happened. A heavy silence reigned over everything.
But suddenly, this silence was broken by a long, sad bark. The people turned around. A German shepherd slowly emerged from the crowd—the officer’s faithful friend. He moved slowly, painfully. The dog stopped in front of the coffin, stared at it, and, mustering the last of his strength, leaped onto the lid.
He clawed with his paws, whimpered, his eyes full of pain and despair. It seemed as if he understood everything and could not resign himself to it. A few men approached to help him down, but at that moment, the dog began to act strangely. He barked loudly, stubbornly banged on the lid, as if he wanted to say something. Everyone remained frozen in shock.
Then, suddenly, the dog fell silent. He lay directly on the coffin and did not move.
The officer’s wife approached. She knew the dog would surely listen to her, but suddenly, the widow cried out:
