David Caruso is best remembered as the calm and commanding Lieutenant Horatio Caine from CSI: Miami, but his acting career began long before the famous sunglasses and dramatic one-liners.
In the early 1980s, Caruso was still building his reputation through smaller supporting roles. One of his notable appearances came in First Blood (1982), where he played a young deputy. His appearance was simple and natural, very different from the polished television image audiences would later associate with him.
That same year, he appeared in An Officer and a Gentleman, portraying a military cadet. These early performances showed Caruso as a youthful, energetic actor still searching for the role that would define his career.
The 1990s brought a major change. Caruso moved toward more serious and intense characters, most notably Detective John Kelly in NYPD Blue. His performance on the hit police drama attracted widespread attention and helped establish him as a recognizable television leading man.

Caruso remained with the series until it ended in 2012. Afterward, he largely stepped away from acting and maintained a much more private life.
