Hermann pretends to be ill to stay home, but his wife Alexandra accidentally overhears him talking to his mother. He admits that he married Alexandra for money and plans to divorce her to pursue a younger woman from a wealthy family. Shocked but composed, Alexandra leaves him that same day.
