My mother-in-law behaved strangely all evening. She barely left our table, hovering around under some far-fetched pretext: either she urgently needed to straighten the napkins, or check if the glasses were level, or just “accidentally” walked by. I tried to ignore her, but her obsessive presence became increasingly unsettling.

Every time I looked up, she seemed to immediately look away. At one point, I went out to dance with my husband, but as I was returning to the table, I noticed my mother-in-law standing next to our glasses, suddenly jerking, as if startled. She pretended to examine the flowers, but her hands were shaking.

Later, when the guests were distracted by the cake, I saw her again – she was standing with her back to the others, leaning over my glass. She looked around, clutching a small bottle, almost hidden in her hand.

And in a split second, confident no one was watching, she poured its contents directly into my champagne. She did it slowly, carefully, as if adding the last drops of poison to one of those detective stories she so loves to discuss.

My hands went cold. I froze and watched as she quickly stuffed the bottle into her tiny purse and, pretending everything was fine, returned to the guests. She expected me to return, pick up the glass, and drink it. That everything would go quietly and smoothly.

But as soon as she turned away, I quickly swapped the glasses. Mine—with a suspicious sediment at the bottom—I placed closer to her plate, and took a completely clean one for myself.

A few minutes later, my mother-in-law raised her glass, preparing to make a toast. She smiled broadly, confident she had finally achieved her goal. I smiled too—but for a different reason.

And when she took her first sip, something unexpected happened 😱🫣 Continued in the first comment 👇👇

She turned pale, swayed, tried to grab the chair, but her arms gave way. The glass slipped and shattered on the floor. The guests gasped. Her husband rushed to her:

— Mom?! What’s wrong with you?

And I stood nearby, icy calm, for the first time not hiding the truth:

— Looks like someone shouldn’t have drunk this particular glass.

Later, at the hospital, I learned the rest. It turns out my mother-in-law had overheard our conversation a few days earlier and realized we were expecting a baby.

And instead of joy, she decided to “spare” us—and herself—the “shame.” She feared rumors, judgment, gossip… and was ready to resort to the lowest possible means.

But in the end, she suffered.
