The guests were already taking their seats when Daniel noticed his daughter wasn’t among them.
Eight-year-old Emma was supposed to walk beside him during the ceremony. Instead, he found her alone behind a floral arrangement, clutching a tiny bouquet and trying to hide her tears.
Daniel immediately knelt beside her.
“Sweetheart, what happened?”
Emma shook her head, but when her father hugged her, the truth finally came out.
“She said after the wedding I won’t live with you anymore.”
Daniel pulled back.
“Who said that?”
Emma looked toward the bride waiting across the hall.
“She did. She said you’ll have a new family now… and I’ll get in the way.”
Daniel stared at his daughter, struggling to understand.
Then Emma pointed toward her bouquet.
“She left something there.”
Hidden between the flowers was a folded note.
Daniel opened it.
The message made his face change instantly. Emma was expected to leave his home after the wedding. Worse, the note warned her to stay quiet until the ceremony was over so she wouldn’t “ruin the day.”
Daniel folded the paper carefully.
Emma looked at him nervously.
“Dad… do you still want me?”
His heart sank.
He lifted her into his arms.
“You never have to ask me that.”
Then he walked straight toward the bride.
The conversations around them slowly stopped.
Daniel held out the note.
“Did you write this?”
The bride glanced around at the guests.
“Daniel, this isn’t the time.”
“It’s exactly the time.”
She lowered her voice.
“I thought you understood. We’re getting married. We need space to build our own family.”
Daniel looked down at Emma, who was holding tightly to his jacket.
Then he reached into his pocket and took out the wedding ring.
“I came here believing today was about choosing the woman I wanted beside me.”
The bride’s face went pale.
Daniel placed the ring on the table.
“But my daughter should never have to compete for her place in my life.”
He turned toward the exit.
Emma whispered, “What about the wedding?”
Daniel kissed her forehead.
“There won’t be one.”
Then he carried his daughter out of the hall.
Behind them were flowers, expensive decorations and stunned guests.
Ahead of them was something far more important.
Home.
