It was late when Daniel noticed a little girl standing outside a small neighborhood restaurant.
She wasn’t asking anyone for money. She was simply staring through the window at the food.
Daniel bought a box filled with a warm meal, bread, and fruit and handed it to her.
“Is all of this for you?”
The girl smiled.
“No… it’s for all of us.”
Daniel watched her walk away.
Concerned about seeing a child alone so late, he followed from a respectful distance.
Several blocks later, she entered an aging apartment building.
Behind one worn door was a tiny room where a woman and two other children sat around an almost empty table.
The little girl proudly placed the food in front of them.
“Mom, look what someone gave us.”
Her mother hugged her.
Then the girl noticed Daniel standing near the doorway.
Her expression suddenly changed.
“Mom… look. He came back.”
Daniel froze.
“Came back?”
The mother slowly raised her head.
Her face went pale.
Daniel immediately recognized her.
“Rachel?”
Years earlier, Rachel had disappeared from his life without explanation. He had tried to find her, but every attempt led nowhere.
Rachel looked down.
“I never wanted you to see us like this.”
Daniel glanced at the children, then back at her.
He finally understood that his encounter with the little girl hadn’t been as random as he’d thought.
He quietly stepped inside and placed another bag of groceries on the table.
That night, a simple box of food reunited two people who had once believed they would never see each other again.
