Snow was falling heavily across New York when a young man noticed an elderly stranger standing beside a city bus.
“Sir, you can’t board without a ticket,” the driver said.
The elderly man shivered.
“Please… I just need to get home.”
The young man looked at the ticket in his hand. It was his last one.
He stepped forward.
“Take mine. I’ll find another way home.”
The elderly man’s eyes filled with emotion.
“Son… I’ll never forget this.”
The bus pulled away, leaving the young man standing in the snow.
A few days later, he arrived for the most important job interview he’d had in months.
He sat nervously in the waiting room of a prestigious employment agency.
Then the office door opened.
The young man slowly stood.
Walking toward him in an expensive suit was the same elderly stranger from the bus stop.
“You…?”
The older man smiled and placed an employment contract on the desk.
“That day, you gave me your last ticket without knowing anything about me.”
The young man stared at the contract.
“Why are you doing this?”
“Because this company needs skilled people,” the older man replied. “But more importantly, it needs people we can trust.”
He pushed the contract toward him.
“You thought you were giving away a bus ticket. What you really gave me was a chance to see your character.”
The young man’s eyes filled with tears.
The small act of kindness he’d almost forgotten had just opened the door he’d been waiting months to find
