He Put His Bare Foot on My Airplane Armrest—So I Taught Him a Lesson He Didn’t Forget

The man looked down.

One of his bare feet was covered by a bright pink compression sock.

Across the ankle, in huge black letters, it said:

PROPERTY OF ROW 18. PLEASE KEEP FEET IN YOUR OWN SPACE.

The woman beside me immediately started laughing.

So did two passengers across the aisle.

His face turned crimson.

“What the hell did you do?”

I stayed calm.

“You said we were all sharing space. I thought I’d label the part you kept leaving in mine.”

The flight attendant walked over.

“What’s going on?”

He pointed at me.

“She put this on my foot while I was asleep!”

The attendant looked at the sock.

Then at his bare feet.

Then at my armrest.

“Sir, were your feet resting on the passenger’s armrest?”

He hesitated.

“That’s not the point.”

“It actually is.”

The attendant’s voice remained polite, but firm.

“Please keep your feet within your own seating area and put your shoes back on.”

A few passengers nearby tried not to laugh.

He yanked off the pink sock and threw it onto my tray table.

I picked it up.

“Thank you.”

For the rest of the flight, both of his shoes stayed firmly on.

About an hour later, he leaned forward between the seats.

“You embarrassed me.”

I turned around.

“No. I asked you twice, politely, to move your foot. You decided my comfort didn’t matter.”

He opened his mouth, but I continued.

“You only became embarrassed when everyone could see exactly how ridiculous your behavior looked.”

He sat back without another word.

When we landed, the woman beside me handed me the sock.

“You should frame this.”

I laughed.

The man behind us hurried off the plane without making eye contact.

I never yelled.

I never touched him.

I never caused a scene.

I simply gave his foot the attention he apparently believed it deserved.

And strangely enough, once everyone else noticed it too, he suddenly remembered that airplanes do, in fact, have personal boundaries.
