The birthday party was supposed to be a celebration, but for Chloe, it was a nightmare. Her sister Vanessa had invited her solely to humiliate her.
“Open it!” Vanessa urged, filming with her phone. “It’s vintage!”
Chloe opened the box. The smell of old cleaning fluids wafted out. Inside was a pile of stained, grey rags. “Thank you, Vanessa,” Chloe whispered, trying to maintain her dignity.
“Don’t mention it. Now go put this in the trash where it belongs,” Vanessa sneered.
Chloe walked to the trash can, but the box felt strangely heavy. She pulled out the top rag, and suddenly, a set of car keys fell onto the floor with a loud clang. Then a bundle of cash. Then a small velvet box.
The room went silent. Vanessa stopped laughing. “Wait, that’s my old box… I didn’t check inside!”
Chloe picked up the keys. They were for a vintage Porsche. She picked up the velvet box; inside was their grandmother’s emerald ring, missing for years.
“You said I could have your leftovers,” Chloe smiled, holding up the keys. “And you just gave me the box you used to hide your stolen stash.”
Vanessa lunged for the box, but the security guards—who had seen the whole thing—stepped in to block her path. “The gift was given, ma’am. Back off.”
