John Foster Delivers a Jaw-Dropping Performance of “I Cross My Heart” on American Idol
Just six weeks after his American Idol audition aired, 18-year-old John Foster is steadily climbing the ranks, with his eyes firmly set on the prize. His journey on the popular singing competition has been nothing short of remarkable, and now, with each performance, Foster is hoping to be the last one standing.
Known for his love of country music and his aspirations to be a singing oncologist, Foster first caught the judges’ attention with his cover of Alan Jackson’s “Don’t Rock The Jukebox.” However, his performance alone wasn’t enough to secure him a Golden Ticket. American Idol judge Carrie Underwood saw potential in Foster but felt that he needed to showcase his vocal abilities further.
Foster took that feedback to heart and delivered a cover of Conway Twitty’s “Goodbye Time.” While the judges were still on the fence, they ultimately awarded him a Golden Ticket to Hollywood.
“I don’t know if vocally it’s there to make it through many, many rounds of American Idol, but I think you got a nice voice,” Luke Bryan told him at the time. “It’s a yes. I went from a no to a yes.”
Clearly, Luke’s initial hesitation about Foster’s vocal potential was unwarranted. As the weeks passed, Foster has emerged as one of the top contenders, gaining momentum with each performance and winning over country music fans with his consistent delivery and quiet confidence.
In his most recent performance, Foster took the stage with a powerful rendition of George Strait’s “I Cross My Heart.” Foster revealed that he had never before sung a love song that truly resonated with him, making this performance even more meaningful. The song was chosen by none other than judge Carrie Underwood, who believed it would highlight Foster’s rich baritone and keep him grounded in his country roots.
As John performed, his girlfriend could be seen in the audience, soaking in every heartfelt moment. The connection between them added an extra layer of emotion to his already captivating performance.
“That was absolutely perfect,” Carrie told him after he finished. “Hearing you sing that song, it felt comfortable, it felt genuine. I feel like this is one of your best performances, John, and it made me so happy.”
Luke Bryan, who had once been uncertain about Foster’s ability to make it far in the competition, took a moment to acknowledge how wrong he had been.
“I was doing my TikTok scroll daily, and I saw a clip of me saying I didn’t know if you could sing good enough back in your audition. And man, no one has ever proved me more wrong than you, and I’m so proud,” Luke shared with a proud smile.
