Heather Unbehaun, who was accused of abducting her daughter from an Illinois suburb six years ago, has turned herself in, bringing an end to a high-profile case. Unbehaun is currently in custody at the Kane County Adult Justice Center in Illinois, where she faces abduction charges and is being held without bail.
Just days before her surrender, Kayla Unbehaun was located safely in North Carolina and reunited with her custodial father. Heather Unbehaun had been arrested in North Carolina on a fugitive warrant from Illinois for kidnapping and child abduction. She was initially held on a $250,000 bond but was released after posting bail on Tuesday, according to Asheville Police Department spokesperson Samantha Booth.
Kayla had been missing since July 4, 2017, when she was abducted following a parade in South Elgin, Illinois. Heather had told Kayla’s father, Ryan Iserka, that they were going on a camping trip, but they never returned. A felony warrant was subsequently issued for Heather’s arrest.
The case saw a breakthrough when someone in Asheville recognized Kayla from an episode of Netflix’s “Unsolved Mysteries” and alerted authorities.
Ryan Iserka expressed his gratitude to law enforcement and the public for their efforts in reuniting him with Kayla. Heather Unbehaun is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday morning at the Kane County Judicial Center.
