Lainey Wilson Responds to Body Shamers with Confidence and Sass
Lainey Wilson, the reigning ACM Entertainer of the Year, isn’t shy about confronting online body-shamers head-on. During a recent interview with Josh Smith on the Reign with Josh Smith podcast, Wilson addressed the cruel comments she’s received, particularly regarding her body, with her signature Southern sass.
When asked if she had any words for those who body-shame her online, Wilson confidently responded, “Kiss my fat a–,” before adding with a laugh, “I’m playing.” The lighthearted tone didn’t hide the strength behind her message: she’s not letting the negativity affect her.
Viral TikTok Moment and Its Aftermath
Wilson’s body gained significant attention on social media in late 2022, especially when a viral TikTok moment thrust her into the spotlight. The release of her GRAMMY-winning album Bell Bottom Country coincided with this newfound fame, and as Wilson put it, “my butt went viral on TikTok.” While initially amused by the attention, the “Watermelon Moonshine” singer quickly found herself overwhelmed by the harsh criticism that came along with it.
Reflecting on the experience, Wilson shared that as a storyteller, she understood the power of words, both positive and negative. “I read way too many things that people had to say about me. And at the end of the day, like, I’m a storyteller. I think that words are powerful,” she explained. “Even if you don’t believe what somebody says about you, even putting your eyes on it for a split second can kind of leave a little mark.”
The Struggles and Decisions to Protect Her Mental Health
Wilson admits that at times, the discourse surrounding her body affected her more than she’d like to admit. “I felt like at one point in time, social media was really preventing me from taking whatever that next step was that I needed to do,” she said. As a result, she made a conscious decision to stop reading the negativity online, recognizing that her mental health needed to come first.
Despite the challenges, Wilson has kept her sense of humor and resilience intact. “I think some people didn’t get their butt whooped as a child,” she joked. “And it shows.” Her Southern spirit and confidence shine through in how she navigates the pressures of public scrutiny.
A Reminder of the Power of Self-Love and Boundaries
Lainey Wilson’s journey through body-shaming and the ups and downs of social media serves as a reminder of the importance of setting boundaries and protecting one’s mental health. With grace, humor, and a lot of confidence, Wilson is continuing to thrive in her career, unapologetically owning who she is and encouraging others to do the same.
