A Miracle of Love and Faith: The Story of Ryan and Jill Finley
For many young couples, marriage represents the beginning of a journey filled with shared dreams and treasured moments. Yet, life’s unpredictability often brings challenges that test the very core of their bond. For Ryan and Jill Finley, that test came unexpectedly one Saturday morning in May 2007.
Ryan Finley woke up to what seemed like any other Saturday. As he glanced at the clock, he realized it was time to wake his wife, Jill. He later recalled, “I went to wake Jill up, which, in itself, was unusual because I never do that on Saturday mornings.”
When calling her name yielded no response, Ryan’s concern grew. He gently shook her, but still, there was no reaction. Panic set in. Without hesitation, he called emergency services and began performing CPR. Paramedics arrived quickly and rushed Jill to the hospital, with Ryan following behind in his truck, his heart heavy with fear.
At the hospital, doctors confirmed Jill had suffered a cardiac arrest. While medical teams worked around the clock to stabilize her, Ryan waited outside the emergency room, hoping for any positive news.
When a doctor finally emerged, his words hit Ryan like a tidal wave: “You should start praying.” Ryan reflected on that moment, later saying, “When a doctor tells you to pray, you know it’s serious.”
Jill had slipped into a coma. At just 31 years old, the vibrant woman Ryan had married was now fighting for her life.
Over the following days, family and friends gathered at the hospital to offer support. Among them was Jill’s cousin, who brought a Bible and read to her for over an hour. Before leaving, he handed the Bible to Ryan and encouraged him to read aloud. From that moment on, Ryan found solace in reading Scripture to Jill, holding onto the hope that she would awaken.
After 11 days, the gravity of the situation weighed heavily on Ryan. Doctors advised that Jill’s chances of recovery were slim and suggested removing her from life support. Torn between love and heartbreak, Ryan reluctantly agreed, scheduling the procedure for the following day.
But on the 14th day of Jill’s coma, everything changed.
As Jill was taken off life support, Ryan stepped away, steeling himself for what he feared would be the end. But then, a nurse approached with an unexpected message: “I think you need to come in; she’s talking.”
Rushing to her side, Ryan heard Jill’s first words: “Get me out of here. I want to go home.”
In disbelief, Ryan tested her with questions only she could answer—simple things, like the names of their pets and basic math problems. Jill answered them all correctly. She even mentioned a craving for food from her favorite Mexican restaurant.
Jill later shared that she had no memory of the coma, only a sense of having been away and now returning. When asked what he believed had brought her back, Ryan answered without hesitation: “God. Divine intervention. I truly believe that.”
The road to recovery was far from easy. Jill had to relearn basic skills—how to brush her teeth, tie her shoes, and more. But she and Ryan viewed this as a second chance—not just at life, but at their marriage.
Today, Jill believes Ryan made the right decision in removing life support, as she would not have wanted to live in a diminished state. However, Ryan still carries the weight of that moment. “Not a night goes by that I don’t wake up and check on her,” he admitted. “I usually give her a nudge, and if she nudges me back, I know we’re okay.”
Sometimes, life gives us a second chance in the most unexpected ways. For Ryan and Jill Finley, that chance has allowed them to thrive—together.
