Sir Tom Jones at 84: “I’m Not Done Yet” — Why the Legend Refuses to Retire
Sir Tom Jones, one of the most enduring voices in music, has opened up about how aging has transformed—not diminished—his vocal power. At 84, the Welsh legend insists he has no plans to retire and still has something to prove.
In a candid interview with Yours Magazine, Sir Tom reflected on how his voice has evolved over the decades:
“My voice is lower now. As we get older, our voices drop and we get more character in them. The older you get, the less control you have over your vocal cords.”
But instead of seeing that as a limitation, he sees it as a strength:
“All you’ve got to do is push it harder… and I can still do that. I can still sing and I can prove it—so here it is.”
Still Touring the World
Despite a music career spanning over 60 years, Sir Tom has shown no signs of slowing down. His Ages and Stages World Tour has already taken him across Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and the UAE this year. Now back in the UK, he’s gearing up for concerts in Surrey, Plymouth, and Southampton, before heading to Spain later this month.
“Being Older Just Gives Me More to Say”
Far from feeling “worn down,” Tom says getting older has only deepened his perspective.

“Being older, I feel I’ve got a point to prove. I can still sing and I can prove it.”
He also touched on the wild days of his career when women famously tossed underwear and hotel room keys on stage.
“You have to use shtick—and then it caught on, and I was drowning in a sea of panties after a while. It backfired on me,” he laughed. “I was in Vegas and someone threw a room key at me. I said, ‘Whose is this?’ and the woman said, ‘Use it and you’ll find out.’”
These days, Tom admits he’s relieved that kind of fan frenzy has calmed down.
Health Scares and Comebacks
Concerns were raised about the singer’s health in 2017 when he underwent hip replacement surgery. He had a second operation five years later, which allowed him to return to live performing at full strength.
“If something went wrong with my vocal ability, I wouldn’t want to go on not in full strength. I wouldn’t like to shortchange an audience,” he told The Metro last year.
He added,
“Being old, you can’t do what you used to do. I mean, I can’t walk around like I used to—but I wouldn’t want to now.”
A Voice That Refuses to Fade
Known for iconic hits like “It’s Not Unusual,” “Delilah,” and “She’s a Lady,” Sir Tom Jones has continued to reinvent himself across generations—from sex symbol to The Voice UK mentor, to global touring artist.
And while his voice may have grown deeper with age, it’s clear that his passion—and his fans’ devotion—remain as strong as ever.
“I can still sing. And I will, as long as I can.”
