Sir Tom Jones at 84: “I Can Still Sing — and I Can Prove It”

Sir Tom Jones may be 84, but the legendary performer has made one thing clear: retirement is not on the horizon. With a voice that has matured and deepened over time, he insists that age has only added more “character” to his sound — and he’s not ready to hang up the microphone just yet.

In a candid interview with Yours Magazine, the Welsh icon opened up about how his voice has evolved:
“My voice is lower now. As we get older, our voices drop and we get more character in them. The older you get, the less control you have over your vocal cords. All you’ve got to do is push it harder… and I can still do that.”

Jones, who launched his career in the 1960s and became a global superstar with hits like “It’s Not Unusual” and “Delilah,” remains determined to keep performing for as long as he’s able. “Being older, I feel I’ve got a point to prove. I can still sing and I can prove it, so here it is.”

A Global Stage for a Timeless Voice
Despite his age, Sir Tom has maintained a busy schedule in 2024 with his Ages & Stages World Tour, performing across Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and the UAE. He’s currently back in the UK, preparing for shows in Surrey, Plymouth, and Southampton, with a stop in Spain later this month.

Humor, Health, and Staying Humble
Tom Jones has always balanced showbiz swagger with self-deprecating charm. Known for his powerhouse voice and enduring status as a sex symbol, he’s had his fair share of colorful fan encounters — including a legendary era where underwear and hotel keys rained down from the audience.

“You have to use shtick, and then it caught on. I was drowning in a sea of panties after a while. It backfired on me,” he laughed. “Once, in Vegas, someone threw a room key at me and I asked, ‘Whose is this?’ and a woman shouted, ‘Use it and you’ll find out.’”

Though amused, he admits he’s relieved that kind of attention has cooled with age.

Still Going Strong
Jones faced a health scare in 2017 when he underwent hip replacement surgery, followed by a second procedure five years later. But both were successful, allowing him to return to the stage with renewed energy.

“If something went wrong with my vocal ability, I wouldn’t want to go on not in full strength,” he shared. “I wouldn’t like to shortchange an audience.”

While he admits he’s slowed down physically — “I can’t walk around like I used to, but I wouldn’t want to now” — his passion for music remains as fierce as ever.

Tom Jones isn’t just aging gracefully — he’s aging loudly, proudly, and on key. And as long as he can still bring down the house with that unmistakable voice, he’ll keep doing just that.
