Five years after our divorce, I saw Marcus again at my cousin’s wedding.
Beside him stood Chloe, the woman he had cheated on me with.
Marcus looked me over and smiled.
“Leaving you was the best decision I ever made.”
I didn’t argue.
Years earlier, when I discovered his affair, Marcus had emptied our joint account and filed for divorce. He believed I would never recover without him.

That evening Marcus knew none of this.

Marcus froze.
Julian appeared behind her carrying Emma’s shoes.
Marcus recognized him immediately.
Julian was the founder of Rhodes Capital—the investment firm currently negotiating to acquire Marcus’s struggling company.
“You’re married to Julian Rhodes?” Marcus asked.
“Yes.”
But the real surprise came later.
Marcus assumed Julian had attended the wedding simply as my husband. In reality, Julian had already decided not to proceed with the acquisition after discovering serious financial irregularities inside Marcus’s business.
The following Monday, Rhodes Capital officially withdrew its offer.
Without the deal, Marcus’s company lost its biggest chance to escape mounting debt. Several investors soon followed Julian’s lead and walked away.
I had nothing to do with the decision.
Marcus had destroyed his own future long before seeing me again.
Months later, I heard that he had sold the company for a fraction of what he once expected.
As for me, I returned home with Julian and Emma to the quiet life I had built after Marcus left.
For years, he had believed our divorce proved that he had won.
