On the road I noticed a bear that was tangled in a net and couldn’t get out: I stopped and helped the bear, but suddenly something unexpected happened
Early this morning I was driving along an international highway, the same one that runs along a dark forest. Wolves and bears live in these places, so when I noticed a brown spot on the side of the road, I wasn’t surprised at first.
My foot pressed the gas pedal, but at second glance I realized: the bear wasn’t just sitting there – he was tangled in a large net. The ropes were pulling his shoulders and paws, his fur was matted into clumps, the animal was breathing heavily and growling as if asking for help.
Cars were flying past: someone was honking, someone was filming on their phone, but no one stopped. My conscience pricked me so much that I turned on the hazard lights, put up a sign and took gloves and an emergency knife for belts from the trunk.
I approached slowly, repeating the same thing out loud: “Quiet… right now, buddy.” The bear jerked, growled, but did not rush. In his amber eyes, there was no anger, but desperate fatigue.

The rope cage turned out to be harsh: the knots were tightly tightened. I cut along the knots, trying not to touch the skin. Every second stretched out: the engine of my car crackled, coolness and wet grass blew from the forest.
First I freed my right paw, then my shoulder. The bear growled more quietly, listened to the rustling of the knife, and endured. Finally the last rope gave way, the net slid down like a heavy cloak.
I froze. We looked at each other; he could pounce – I knew that. But at that moment the bear did something, after which I was shocked 😱😱 Continued 👇👇

But the animal only slightly raised its muzzle, as if remembering my face, and, without taking its eyes off, backed away into the forest. I exhaled, picked up the rolled up net, and was already reaching for the car door, when there was another crunch in the bushes.
The bear returned. My heart sank, but I immediately noticed: in its mouth it was holding a tiny bear cub. The mother carefully lowered the baby onto the grass and took a step back.
The bear cub squeaked, nuzzled my boot, and the mother stood next to me, not looking away for a second. I sat down and ran my hand over the soft, warm back – the animal allowed it. It seemed to be saying: “Look, for whose sake you saved me.”
A minute later, the mother bear took the cub and disappeared into the shadow of the fir trees. I called the forestry department, reported the poacher’s trap, and only then rode on – with a lightness in my chest and a feeling as if the forest itself nodded to me in gratitude.
