Phoebe Cates is best known for her role as Kate Beringer and for her performances in several popular teen films of the 1980s, including Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Gremlins. Over a 12-year career, she appeared in 16 films and also worked in theater.
Born in New York City in 1963, Cates began modeling as a child before turning to acting. She initially trained as a dancer but shifted paths after a knee injury. In addition to film work, she performed in off-Broadway and Broadway productions, often expressing a strong preference for stage acting.

In the 1990s, Cates gradually stepped away from Hollywood. After marrying actor Kevin Kline, she chose to focus on family life. The couple has two children.
In 2005, she opened a boutique called Blue Tree in New York City, where she has concentrated on business ventures. Although she has occasionally returned for small projects, including voice work connected to Gremlins, she has largely remained out of the spotlight.
Today, Phoebe Cates is remembered for her contributions to 1980s cinema while living a more private life centered on family and entrepreneurship.
