When I hired Laura, I felt incredibly lucky. Young, beautiful, neat, and hardworking, she quickly became indispensable in our home. Everything was always perfect: clean, tidy, delicious food, ironed clothes. My family often said that such a helper was a true rarity.
Over time, I began to treat her almost like a member of the family. My son also respected her and often said I had inherited a true treasure.
And then his wedding day arrived. The house was full of guests, music was playing in the hall, everyone was smiling and congratulating the newlyweds. I looked at my son and his bride and felt truly happy. But just seconds before the ceremony, everything fell apart.
Laura suddenly ran onto the stage, knelt before my son, and said in a trembling voice, “Forgive me… But I can’t remain silent any longer. I’m not just a woman who worked in this house. I’m your mother.”
A deathly silence fell over the room. The guests were transfixed. My son froze in place, and his fiancée turned pale with shock.
But that wasn’t all.
Through tears, Laura confessed that many years ago, when she was very young, she had given birth to a son and was forced to give him up to another family. That child turned out to be my son, whom I raised as my own. Years later, she returned to our lives disguised as a housekeeper, just to be with him and watch him grow up.
I, too, could no longer hide the truth and confirmed her words.
It seemed things couldn’t get any worse. But then Laura turned to the bride and uttered a phrase that took everyone’s breath away:
“You can’t marry him… because you’re my daughter.”
After these words, the wedding turned into a nightmare. It turned out that many years earlier, Laura had given birth to a daughter, whom she also lost. No one knew that fate would one day bring her children together again—and they would fall in love, unaware that they were brother and sister.
Later, DNA testing confirmed the terrible truth. The wedding was called off.
Our lives were never the same. My son suffered a terrible blow, my fiancée disappeared from our lives for a long time, and Laura found herself a woman who had lived for years next to her own children, unable to call them her own.
That day, she ruined my son’s wedding. But perhaps in doing so, she saved two lives.
