One quiet evening, an elderly woman sat alone in a small restaurant.
When the bill arrived, she counted the money in her purse several times.
Finally, embarrassed, she called the young waiter over.
“Son… I’m sorry. I don’t have enough money to pay.”
The waiter noticed the worry in her eyes.
“Don’t worry about it. Dinner is on me tonight.”
She stared at him.
“But why?”
He smiled.
“Because kindness doesn’t cost anything.”
Tears filled the woman’s eyes.
She thanked him quietly and left.
For the waiter, that was the end of it.
But the following day, an elegantly dressed man entered the restaurant carrying an envelope.
He asked specifically for the young waiter.
“The customer you helped yesterday wasn’t an ordinary woman.”
The waiter looked confused.
“She’s a millionaire. But after some difficult experiences, she’d almost lost her faith in people.”
The man handed him the envelope.
“What you did changed that.”
Inside were several official documents.
The waiter began reading—and froze.
“What does this mean?”
The man smiled.
“She bought this restaurant.”
The waiter stared at him.
“And she decided to give it to you.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“But I was only trying to help her.”
“Exactly,” the man replied. “That’s why she chose you.”
The waiter slowly looked around the restaurant where, just one day earlier, he’d simply been doing his job.
The meal he’d given away hadn’t cost much.
