The Secret of the Medallion

interesting to know

During a morning briefing at a military headquarters, a young female officer named Emily stood before the general.

As she turned, the old gold medallion around her neck suddenly broke loose and fell onto the floor.

The general picked it up.

The moment he saw the engraving, his expression changed.

“Where did you get this?”

Emily hesitated.

“My mother gave it to me. She said it belonged to my father. He disappeared many years ago.”

The general stared at the medallion.

“What was your mother’s name?”

Emily told him.

He became completely silent.

Then he ran his thumb over the old engraving.

“I carved this symbol myself.”

Emily stared at him.

“You knew my father?”

The general looked away for a moment.

“I knew him better than you could imagine.”

He turned the medallion over and opened it.

Inside was a tiny handwritten message.

His face suddenly went pale.

“I wrote these words myself.”

Emily stepped closer.

“When?”

The general looked directly into her eyes.

“The day I was forced to leave your mother.”

Emily could barely speak.

“What are you saying?”

For her entire life, Emily had believed her father had disappeared and was probably dead. Her mother had refused to discuss him.

But now the truth was standing in front of her.

The general was not simply someone who had known her father.

He was her father.

“Why did you never come back?” Emily whispered.

The general lowered his eyes.

“I was forced to disappear. At the time, I believed it was the only way to protect you and your mother.”

He reached into his uniform and pulled out an old photograph.

Emily immediately recognized her mother.

Beside her stood a much younger version of the man now standing before her.

Emily looked from the photograph to the general.

For the first time, she had a face to put with the father she had spent her entire life wondering about.

The general placed the medallion back into her hand.

“I lost many years,” he said quietly. “But if you allow me, I don’t want to lose any more.”

Emily closed her fingers around the old medallion.

The answer to the biggest mystery of her life had been hanging around her neck all along.
