Emily had been waiting nearly an hour in an elegant Manhattan hotel restaurant.
Her boyfriend, Daniel, was supposed to meet her for their anniversary dinner, but he wasn’t answering his phone.
Then a young server approached her table.
“Miss… there’s something you need to know.”
Emily looked up.
“Your boyfriend went upstairs to a room with another woman.”
Emily stared at her.
“Are you sure?”
The server discreetly placed a hotel key card beside her hand.
“I saw them enter. If you want the truth, this will open the door.”
Minutes later, Emily stood outside the room.
She tapped the card against the lock.
Red.
Then green.
Before opening the door, she heard Daniel’s voice.
“She was never supposed to know about this room.”
Emily slowly pushed the door open.
But there was no romantic scene waiting inside.
Daniel was sitting across from an older woman. Photographs, documents, and a small wooden box covered the table.
“Emily?”
“Who is she?”
Daniel couldn’t answer.
The older woman did.
“I’m his mother.”
Emily froze.
Daniel had always told her his mother had died when he was a child.
The woman opened the wooden box.
“Daniel lied to you. But not because he was seeing someone else.”
For months, Daniel had secretly been searching for the mother who had disappeared from his life decades earlier.
Tonight was their first meeting.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Emily asked.
“Because I needed to know why she abandoned me first.”
His mother shook her head.
“I never abandoned you.”
Then Emily noticed one of the photographs on the table.
Her breath caught.
She picked it up.
The photograph showed Daniel’s mother as a young woman.
Standing beside her was Emily’s father.
“What is my dad doing in this picture?”
Daniel’s mother went pale.
Daniel slowly stood.
Nobody answered.
Emily had walked upstairs expecting to discover betrayal.
Instead, she had opened the door to a secret connecting their two families for almost thirty years.
And judging by Daniel’s mother’s expression, the most important part of that secret still hadn’t been revealed.
