The surgeon was supposed to start the operation, but suddenly noticed something on the patient’s body and categorically refused to operate 😱😱 The usual, almost routine bustle reigned in the operating room. The nurses laid out the instruments on the sterile tables, the surgeon checked the lighting of the lamps and instructed the assistants. The measured hum of the machines could be heard through the half-open door. “The patient was brought in unconscious,” the anesthesiologist said quietly, “he was found on the street. The pressure is unstable, but we are ready to begin.”
“The main thing is to make it in time,” the surgeon answered, buttoning up his sterile gown. “If everything goes according to plan, we will save him.” The surgeons and assistants went to the sinks. The movements were honed, familiar: hand washing, gloves, masks. The nurses were already covering the patient with a blue surgical sheet, connecting sensors, setting up monitors. A slight smell of antiseptic hung in the air. Everything was going the same way as hundreds of times before.
The surgeon approached the table, picked up an instrument… and suddenly froze. His gaze lingered on the exposed area of the patient’s skin. The doctor’s forehead furrowed. He slowly put the instrument down. “We’re canceling the operation,” he said firmly. There was silence in the operating room. “What do you mean cancel?!” the nurse did not hide her indignation. “If we don’t do anything now, we won’t be able to save him!” “I have no right to take risks,” the surgeon replied.
“There is a protocol in such cases.” He took off his gloves and, without saying another word, left.
