Len Goodman, beloved judge on Dancing with the Stars, has sadly passed away at the age of 78. The English dancer and choreographer died on Saturday in a hospice in Kent, England, following a long battle with bone cancer. His manager, Jackie Gill, confirmed the news and shared that Goodman was surrounded by family at the time of his passing.

Goodman was known for his warm and engaging personality, serving as a judge on Dancing with the Stars from 2005 until 2018, alongside fellow judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli. He also gained fame as the head judge on the British version of the show, Strictly Come Dancing, from its debut in 2004 until his retirement in 2016. His influence on both the UK and US versions of the show was immense, and he was a key figure in making Strictly a household name.
Born in London in 1944, Goodman started dancing at the age of 19 and went on to have a successful career as a professional dancer before transitioning into television. He was admired for his expertise in ballroom dancing and his ability to connect with audiences.
Tributes have poured in from all corners of the entertainment world. BBC director-general Tim Davie praised Goodman as a “wonderful, warm entertainer who was loved by millions,” noting that his ability to make people feel like part of his family contributed to his widespread popularity. Bruno Tonioli, his longtime co-judge, expressed his sorrow on social media, calling Goodman a “ballroom LEGEND” and sharing his deep gratitude for their 19 years together.
Outside of television, Goodman was a dedicated dance educator, running the Goodman Dance Academy in Kent. His passion for dance extended beyond the stage, and he also authored several books, including his autobiography Better Late Than Never: From Barrow Boy to Ballroom and Dancing Around Britain.
Len Goodman’s legacy will continue to live on through the countless dancers he inspired, the fans he entertained, and the family he cherished. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
