Claire signed the divorce papers with tears in her eyes while Grant sat across from her in silence. She wanted to tell him she was pregnant, but when he coldly said, “I just want this to end,” the last piece of her hope broke.
In the restroom, she crushed the pregnancy test in her trembling hand and threw it away. Then she disappeared from his life and raised her daughter Lily alone.
Six years later, Claire took Lily to a children’s art competition. Only inside the building did she notice the name on the wall: Mercer Foundation.
Grant appeared a moment later. He stopped as soon as he saw the little girl. Lily had Claire’s smile, but his gray eyes.
“Mom,” Lily asked, “why does that man look like me?”
The room went silent.
Claire looked at Grant and finally said, “Because he is your father.”
Grant’s face filled with shock and regret. He stepped closer, but Claire stopped him.
“You chose to leave before you knew the truth. Now you don’t get to walk in as if nothing happened.”
Grant lowered his head, tears in his eyes. Then Lily quietly handed him one of her drawings.
“You can start by saying sorry,” she whispered.
That day did not erase the pain, but it gave Lily the truth. And Claire finally walked away without fear, knowing she had never been the one who lost everything.
