Phoebe Cates became one of the most recognizable faces of 1980s cinema, but her life eventually took a very different direction from the typical Hollywood story.
Born in New York City in 1963, Cates entered the entertainment world at a young age. She worked as a model and originally dreamed of becoming a professional dancer. However, a knee injury forced her to reconsider that path, eventually leading her toward acting.
Her breakthrough years made her a familiar presence on the big screen. Audiences remember her especially for Fast Times at Ridgemont High and for playing Kate Beringer in Gremlins.
